What does the filter actually do?

It filters your shower water. Your water supplier adds chlorine to kill bacteria - which is considerate of them - but that same chlorine strips natural oils from your skin and hair every time you shower. Add hard water minerals, heavy metals, sediment, and the occasional unpleasant surprise from ageing pipes, and your daily shower is working against you. The activated carbon fibre filter removes up to 99% of chlorine and contaminants before the water reaches you.

When do I replace the filter?

We recommend every three months under normal usage conditions. The actual frequency depends on how heavily the shower is used and the quality - or lack thereof - of your local water supply. If you live somewhere with particularly challenging water, you may find yourself replacing it sooner. The used filter, when you remove it, will tell you everything you need to know about what has not been reaching your skin. It is usually not a pretty sight - but always a good reminder.

Will it soften my water?

Yes - if you use The Filthy Pig™ Shower Head Filter Plus*.

* Technically, our filter chelates i.e. deactivates hard water minerals like calcium and magnesium. The minerals are still dissolved in the water but will not leave nasty residues or cause lime scale build-ups.

No reputable filter brand will claim otherwise. True water softening i.e. removing the hard water minerals requires an ion-exchange or reverse-osmosis system.

Is it super easy to replace?

Yes - the shower head comes with a G 1/2 universal thread connection which is the standard fitting found on the overwhelming majority of shower hoses in the United Kingdom and Europe.
